Ok, I need some help. I decided to spring for my first bait-casting rod and reel combo. I've found some affordable set-ups but after handling some I'm confused. I apologize for my ignorance, but most reels have the reel on the right side. After playing around with some of these I decided I'm uncomfortable with this probably because I'm used to using a spinning rig. I cast and work the rod with my right hand and reel with my left. I've found some set-ups on-line that have the handle on the left side but now I'm wondering if there is a good reason it's always on the right side. Don't want to order a reel on line I won't be able to use. Would appreciate some expert advice on this. Is this a personal preference thing or is it on the right side for very good reason?

Most people that use rightys are, dare I say it, Old  lol.  I don't think lefty's were around back then, at least not as easy to find.  If you are left handed I guess a righty would be the logical choice though.

I agree chris 100% , ryan is much older than most know (40'S). lol

So riddle me this , Ryan is Right handed , he casts with his left hand and uses a right hand retreive while standing sideways .. dare i say it , TARDED :-) !!

OK hold on fruity.  A) I'm 30 which is younger than you.  B) I use both hands(goaxyermom) I write with my left and Throw with my right. It feels natural to reel with my right.  I feel tarded when i grab your  backwards reels
Don't over look the abu garcia revo s. It is a bargain at a little over $100 andas good as any newbie will need. And go south paw. You save about a second or two after every cast. Plus, you don't have to fight the fish with you left arm.
Looks like we're in the minority here Josh, but I've always used Right retrieve reels as well. Almost gotten into the habit of flip/pitch with my left hand just because of potential quick strikes. But if i'm casting any bait, I'll cast normally.
Sheesh, my plan was to buy an economy combo between $50-$100. Guess that won't be happening. Gonna have to spend a little more for the luxury of a left hand reel.

no no no.... buy a used reel that's left handed reel and you'll like it. I always try to buy on sale or used. Their just too expensive these days.

I use both right and left though. Reaction baits for example, were a quick hook set isn't the big deal I use right hand retreive and switch hands on the cast. After a while you really get the rods switch in the air anyway on reactions anyhow. If your gonna be throwing rattle traps all day even KVD reels right handed. Brent E. reels right on reactions, Skeet does it also and they all switch hands on the cast.

Your right hand, if your right handed, in my opinion should be be used for whats most important in the fishing technique. If it's reeling I use my right power hand for stamina and power to reel faster and if it's hook sets like when flipping or pitchin I'd set the hook with my right and reel with left. Preference for sure like most have said. But end of the day it really don't matter because finding the fish is the hard part.

Just depends on technique being used to me, but plenty of guys have made big bucks and caught tons of fish using right hand retrieve and switching hands.

Question about the jerk baits; don't you think you could do a better job working the bait with the rod in your dominant hand?

I only like left hand retrieve. Just seems more natural being a right handed person. I like having my "power arm" for hooksets
I use to use right but some one had me use lefed and I fell in love with it its all about what you are use to and perfer ........ sory about the spelling
Chris was the first to touch on it, don't go with a cheap baitcaster. Today reels are much better then when I got my first baitcaster, go for the most you can afford. If ya have to save up a little longer it will be well worth it. There are many good brands out there. The final choice it yours as you will get lots of personal opinions here whitch 99.99 percent of it good.
i bought a pflueger bait casting reel for 59.99 at walmart. has been really good for the price! start out with something like that
