The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

So as I'm venturing into the swimbaits, I'm curious if you guys gravitate toward the braid to floro/mono hook up. Alberto knot? Leader spools vs filler spools. Line brand? I've talked with somebody on this and would like to hear all other opinions. I've already taken a choice in what I'm going to do but I wanted to see what others are doing. Maybe we can all learn from who does what and why...it seems to change as line, baits, hooks and snaps evolve. I'm not second guessing what I've been told one bit...trying to start a learning post that we can use as a high end guide with complete confidence.

The NBK is very simple to tie. Practice it a dozen times or so and you'll become an expert. The last two steps are the most important. The tag end of the braid must exit the mainline loop the same direction it entered, and make sure your knot stacks nice and neat as well as tightened with maximum force for the lb. tests. This will allow you to trim your mono/fluoro right up to the knot.

Use the knot as well. What have you guys found to be good as far as number of wraps up and back with various lb tests?

Around 7 wraps each way for the heavier lb. tests and up to 9 or 10 each way for lighter lb. tests. Have yet to experience a failure.

... if i were to do it all over again from the beginning:

  • straight mono with a long TAG end

it aint pretty at the line tie, but it turns those followers into biters.  no mas braid for me.

trikfish 25-30lbs (camo) - priced well enough to spool up without backing

T Dot could you break it down as to why? Fault?

If you're running 20-25+ feet of leader in clear water, do you think it costs you bites? Not disagreeing, just curious.

Question, lets say I'm running 65 lb braid to 20-25 lb mono or flouro.  10+ feet of leader, meaning its coming through all the guides on every cast.  Should I be re-tieing this knot at least once during the day, or will it last all day ?  I have no experience with this knot to leader stuff.

Hey Chris, I would never discourage anyone from retying as I think it's better to retie and not need to than via versa. However, I've found this knot holds up very well the entire day. My recommendation would be to check out your knot every so often to see if it is showing any signs of fraying or wear, and make the call based on your visual observations.

My experience on baitcasting gear has been than once I start tying leaders long enough to wind on to the spool (wind on leaders) then that knot can be a bitch on my thumb coming off the spool. Last year I used some Power Pro Hollow Core Ace with my wind on leaders. I works well, but is not something you would want to do on the boat like you could with tying a section of leader on with the alberto knot. With the alberto knot, I keep that leader short enough so it doesn't come off the spool.

Don, great point about the discomfort on the thumb. On the larger round baitcasters like the 400 series Calcutta, I find where the knot is located before casting and I specifically "thumb control" the spool away from the knot. Harder to avoid with wind on leaders on low profile baitcasters. With practice, I've been able to use very little pressure on the spool until the knot exits the reel to avoid tearing up my thumb. Important to have your brakes and magnetics set properly, or it could get ugly.

Thank you Tag, and thanks Don for that good piece of info.  I think I will keep it short enough to not wind onto the spool at first until I am comfortable with my tying technique.  If I see fish start to shy away due to my length of leader (and that happens a ton even using straight mono with SB's) I'll have to lengthen it up a bit.

Tag I'm a Calcutta TE guy so I don't see a ton of backlashes, I think my thumb will be out of the way enough at takeoff haha.

I think my biggest problem will be Will I take enough uummpphh off the hookset since I'll be using braid more.  Some of these fish catch you off guard and when they strike it's usually a good surprise, Tag knows lol.
