Washington Fishing

Curious to know what guys carry on the boat with them or in their trucks in regards to maintenance or repair for your boat/trailer. I'd love to come up with a comprehensive list of the items that are "must haves" and "nice to haves" and share it on WAFISH.

I had some issues with my trim this weekend and found my self in need of a spanner wrench, snap ring pliers, and some power trim fluid, probably not necessary to carry on-board the boat but would be great to have in the truck. I'll have them next time around for sure in addition to the items below I always carry:

  • Phillips and Flat Head Screwdrivers
  • Crescent Wrench
  • Prop Wrench
  • Spare Cotter Pin
  • Small socket set
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Electrical Tape
  • Zip Ties
  • Spare Trolling motor prop and hardware

So what else are you guys, tournament fishermen or not, carrying when you head out on the lake for the day or weekend?

I'd add
- gorilla tape
- 4-5 feet of spare electrical wiring and adaptors
- spark plugs
- AA. AAA batteries
- couple diff sizes, lengths of nuts and bolts
- lighter

Thanks for the reply Zach, I'll also add a hot glue stick and spare rod tips. This saved my butt during a divisional tournament last year when the ceramic piece popped out of the tip top of my rod.

I carry between what's in my truck and what's in my boat appropriately:

Voltmeter

Wire stripper/terminal tool

Ratchet w/all necessary sockets

Wrenches

Flat and Phillips Screwdrivers

Tape

Zip Ties

Electric Drill w/common bits and size drivers

Nut Drivers

Torque Wrench

Other general tools

Along with the above items, I carry the following:

1) length of cord for troll motor

2) mini jumper cables- easy to make, Ron turned me on to this several years back

3) couple pieces of 2x4

4) Box of Marine Tex

5) Head lamp

I typically have everything except what I need;)

Someone should build a good quality kit for this. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

How many carry a spare prop or hub kit for the big motor? I can name two occasions where DJ and I wish we had.

I'm curious about the mini-jumper cables. What would these be for? Is this something where you jump your cranking battery from your trolling batteries in case it dies or am I way off track?

You are correct.

I carry jumper cables also, had to use them once when my starting battery failed. Have used them many times to jump other boaters. The number one item that is a must is a roll of Charmin. A one gallon plastic ice cream pail also comes in handy, great in case the live well pump fails and other emergency.

After this past weekend I would add to carry a spare spindle and hub kit; don't ask me how I know.

I carry a spare prop for both my outboard and my trolling motor and all the necessary hardware or hub kits.  I carry a complete tool kit, but my only complaint is the case that it is in is not water tight and I have had rust problems.

Don't forget wheel bearings, seals, grease, and tools to change out that stuff on your trailer.  Spare fuses have saved me on the water and a must have is a tow rope. Invest in a good 50 foot one. It will last years and be indispensable when needed.

So after I load all of this in my boat where does my fishing tackle go!  I carry some basics tools for boat repairs like a 11in1 screwdriver, channel locks, crescent wrench, tape, fuses, and rope.  I also like Doug was saying carry a bucket in my truck for the trailer, my year ranger has a bad rep for hub failures so I don't wanna get stranded.
