Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

A friend of mine and I fished Tapps and caught a couple of smallies from Tapps. As he cleaned one of the fish a very large white worm started pressing out of the fishes anus. It was a white/pearl in color. Not a plastic worm a real one. Needless to say that fish is going in the garden. I've got some video on my cell. If I can transfer it to my computer I will. And show what it looked like. Anyone ever have this experience from Tapps or any other lake? Is it something to worry about? Thanks, T.

Riffe has them also! I don't know what they are!
Noticed several smallies on Lake Chelan with the same issue, long stringy white substance coming out of the fish, a couple of them were trailing it a foot or more behind them.
Yea, talked to my dad back in Wisconsin. He said its pretty common with the Smallies back there too. He thinks its probably from their diets. Craws and such.Or just a bad parasite.. Smalljaws..yes it was pretty gnarly looking.Disgusting actually.Looked kinda like a living white snot! Unfortunatley the fish will die eventually. Guess it was good he harvested a couple. They'll feed the garden pretty good. And now figured out that I'd probably NEVER eat anything from Tapps. Too bad..So too with that if anyone asks if you can eat Muskies.I'll just show them my phone video and ask them if the Muskies eat that would ya eat the Muskies? Or drink the water in a few years..? Yikes!
I've seen it in all lakes. I can't think of a fish that doesn't have parasites, they all have them I think it is pretty natural occurence, but I am not a specialist on the matter. I just don't think it is anything out of the norm, maybe you should use cow shit as fertilizer instead of other resources!
parasites are actually common, including tape worms that get in the intestinal tract. Parasitic worms (even those in the flesh) are not harmful if the meat is cooked. Of course, if it bothers you at all there is always catch and release...

Drawing the conclusion that the parasites are fatal is a creative leap. They rarely are. It is not a good idea to eat bass in this state. It is amazing to me that with all the information available on the subject people still eat them. Getting a parasite from one would suck. So would having a bunch of mercury and other heavy metals accumulate in your brain.

I just thought of something. It may sound provocative and revolutionary at first but give the idea a chance before you dismiss it. Catch the fish, enjoy the battle, then release it so someone else may have the opportunity to do the same. Crazy stuff, I know.

Word x 2
If we had seen the worm prior to putting it in the live well I/we surely would have released it. And just a thought here. If we/you or others don't take some fish then you know what happens? The lake gets stunted. Crap loads of small fish that are very where. You can see it now with the perch and the bass in Tapps. Gazillions of 4 inch perch/bass with no bigger ones to catch. Then the lake gets poisoned. Then redone and the cycle starts over. I respect the guys that catch and release. I do it myself. 99% of the time. But,people do have the right to take some fish.Hell I can dig a crappie sandwich or a perch fish fry.Hell back in Wisconsin my family did it every Friday at the local church fish fries. I would expect the same respect from those that catch and release. Tapps has a 10 fish (smallie) take home limit for a reason.Crap loads of Smallies.. My buddy had intended to eat those fish. (2) he kept plus some rock bass. And the one that had the big ass worm in it..well it probably would have died had we let it go. Oh by the way from experience, chicken crap is better fertilizer.

Im curious to know what you are basing this statement on. Again a lot of fish have worms parasites ect and show no ill effects from it.

And the one that had the big ass worm in it..well it probably would have died had we let it go. :
I'm waiting on the video from my cell to come through here. All I know is that it was a nasty freegin worm/parasite that was in the belly of this 10 inch bass.It wasn't like a stringy worm. That Ive seen in salmon and trout. ok. Life experience with animals that get worms. They can get them taken care of..if not ..they (animals) die right? Maybe I'm wrong on thinking this about fish.If thats the case fine. All I did was put out there my opinion and what I saw coming out of that fish. Maybe this is to deep of a conversation piece on this discussion? So, after the vid..then I'll just drop the whole freekin' subject...T.
