Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

It's still stuck in my head like it happened yesterday , I was 16 years old at the time living in Michigan . A good friend of mind (Andy) Came over my house after school with his dads tackle box in hand. We made a trip to a small lake not far from us and decide to cast for bass. I decided to go with the Original Rapala broke floating back minnow , Andys advise to me was to cast it out as far as possible reel it and stop it all the way back to shore . It was about my third or forth cast with the bait when i noticed something "different" had occured ! The bait hasn't floated back up to the surface , i stood there for about 15 seconds thinking to myself whats going on . Shortly afterwards my line started running across the lake and thats when i went to battle on my first LMB taken by way of an artificial bait . 3lb LMB , as Andy and i giving eachother high fives , i proberly held that fish out water for about 5 minutes admiring the fact that i fool him ! lol Needless to say , the very next day Andy and i went to a local tackle store to purchase our first bass baits , And also sent in our membership dues to B.A.S.S. Mag ...lol To this day i still keep one of those Rapalas in my tackle to remind me of why i love this sport so much !! So whats your story ?????

A Largie, throwing a black rooster tail fishing for trout in a pond local to my home town. I think thats called bycatch....:o) Didn't know what it was at first...Dad identified it, took it home and ate it...LOL. Maybe 1.5-2lbs... was a to long ago.
I caught my first bass on a lure when I was 15. I had just moved to Walla Walla and there was a pond just down the road from my house. I was eager to find out if there were fish in it so I asked the owner and he told me there were lots of bass, crappie and sunfish. I had never fished for bass before so I went to a local tackle shop and asked. They hooked me up with a few jigheads and Jerry's grubs. I went back to the pond that day and caught my first largemouth on a grub. It wasn't a huge fish but I was hooked and it changed my life forever!
Sure do, I was 16 and spending summer vacation at Rainbow Beach Resort on Twin Lakes. The trout fishing was very slow that year, but I saw this kid catching fish after fish from under the docks. I had no idea what kinda fish he was catching so I went over and introduced myself. He told me he was catching bass. The next day I dug into my tackle box and pulled out the only bass lure I had. A storm rattlin Chug Bug. On my first cast that morning I caught a 5lb largemouth and have been hooked ever since.
I do I do. I even remember the first one I lost. It was on a Hula Popper fishing from shore. I'm not going to say what I caught my first bass on as it is still my secret lure. But I did catch the fish in a small creek, and those bass didn't want anything unless it moved.
Nope don't remember my first.
Hey Dez
My first bass came a very long time go at the mouth of the Grande Ronde, where it enters the Snake River. I was fishing for summer run steelhead with my Dad just below the Grande Ronde River next to our camp site on the snake. A truck towing an aluminum boat pulled up and the driver got out to see how fishing was. We had caught some nice steelhead earlier in the day. During our conversation he said he was here to catch bass. “Bass” I said, there’s bass in this river! He said, you bet. Lots of smallmouth up to 4 pounds. I asked him what he used to catch bass and he said why don’t you come with me and I will show you how. Wow, I had never caught a bass and that sounds like fun.
We launched his boat in the snake and I was a little concerned about a boat with no freeboard. He punched the throttle and away we went, fast......I mean real fast for some one that was a shore fisherman. We ended up just above the mouth of the Grange Ronde which forms a nice spot to fish. He hooked me up with a lead head jig and a black worm. Now fish this just like you were fishing for steelhead and give it a little hop now and then. I made my cast up stream and while tightening up my line, I asked him how do you tell when you get a bit. Before he could answer a fish almost tore my rod out of my hand. I set the hook and the fish started peeling line out into the current of the snake. Looking his direction I said, I think I have a steelhead. He was just smiling and then a three pound smallie came flying out of the water.
That was my first bass and I will never forget it.
See ya on the water~~~~~~~~~><)))))’>~~~~~~~~~~Gary
My first bass was when i was uh i think 14 or 15. It was at teh rock island ponds. Im pretty sure it came off a grub and i learned that if i would cast it out and reel it over the weeds they would come out and grab it. After that i pretty much loved it and wanted to learn more. the funny thing is when i was alot younger, like 6 or 7 i used to hate bass and only like to trout fish, funny how things change over time.

I have been fishing Twin Lakes since 1974 and caught thousands of bass out of that lake, its awsome. Our family still has a summer place at Rainbow Beach Resort right on the water, we try to get up there at least a couple of weeks every year. How long has it been since you have been up there?

my first bass was on a #70 hot shot trolling in a private lake in the sultan basin. the fish weighed just over 7 lbs. Ive never disclosed the exact location of that lake but if someone asked , I would give you a name of the people that live on that lake to find out for yourselves that their are much bigger fish than that living in that lake. any takers?
I do, remember it like it was yesterday. I was going on my 3rd year stationed at Fort Lewis, was fishing for cutthroat trout on Johnsons Marsh with a silver w/black back Rapala. Had four on the stinger and made a cast when suddenly there was a big explosion on the lure just after it touched down on the water. It was my first ever bass, a large mouth that probably would have weighted in at over 5 pounds. What a fight it was!!! It wasn't long after that I picked up my first issue of "Bassin" and became a bass fisherman.
It was on a small private lake outside of Beverly WA. It was about a 1lb Smallie on a smoke color single tail grub rigged Texas style. That was the first way I learned how to fish plastics and I caught her while fishing off a dock. I believe this is a pic of that first Bass. It's amazing looking back over the past 6yrs I have learned so much and had so much fun Bass fishing! Dez thanks for taking us down memory lane.

First bass ever was a largemouth on Whitestone in May 2007, caught on a white Terminator spinnerbait with zoom chunk. Silly putting a jig chunk on there but the bass slammed it.
My wife took a great action shot of the fish blowing up out of the water!

I still have that same bait, with chunk, and piece of line tied to it, saved in my special lure collection!

Whitestone is awesome!
