Planning on trying my luck at flipping and pitchin this year and was wondering what would be a good rod to start off with. I have been looking at the St.Croix Mojo bass rod as well at the Shimano Clarus. Just curios on what else may be out there, locally, for purchase. Not quite ready for a Loomis.

Pitch and Flip two different technique. 6 meter or less I flip. More of 6 meter I pitch. I Pitch and Flip many jig. I catch many big bass do both technique. Baitcast tackle is best for both technique. Who use spinning rod and why for Pitch and Flip?
Very GOOD questions there! I think we are all still awaiting a viable reason...

Kistler LTX for me and yes this is a baitcasting set up for those not in the know. I know they used to have some issues with being brittle prior to 2009 but I have a bunch of Kistlers and have not broke one yet. (Knock on wood)

I think that Ordella rods are Rainshadow blanks so I'm not sure how they call them a custom Ordella unless they have started making their own blanks but I thought they weren't in business anymore? Maybe Russ's rods are a custom baitcasting/spinning/loomis hybrid:)
The only people who use spinning gear to flip OR pitch are dumbasses.

i gotta admit i am one of those guys that will pitch a dropshot setup at a dock.

Ordella is no longer in biz anymore and yes they were made from Rainshadow blanks. I pro staffed for them for two years and am still fishing with them.

I have been pitching and flipping since the mid 70's oh thats right before most of the guys in ths discussion were born and I do know the difference between the two (Missy).

As far as pitching with a spinning rod Mr Delay its pretty darn easy and extremely accurate if your good at it. It is very effective for slinging small jigs under trees, docks, etc. Have stuck many toads like this when guys with a baitcaster had not a clue how to get a bait in tight situations. Now flipping with a spinning outfit makes no since and I don't do.
who have the most hard of hookset on hear? I want to learn how to make so many power for hook the big one with a jig. I want to learn from who have so much hookset power. Thank you.
i hear that tag watson sets the hook so hard that he literaly has come out of his shoes

Definetley not the same and is not categorized when people say flipping and pitching. I under hand cast it but unlike you my family tree has branches so this must make me smarter!

Russ you are contradicting your self again

"Now flipping with a spinning outfit makes no since and I don't do." This is your last sentence of your last reply. (you spelled "sense" wrong and forgot "it")

Now here is your first sentence in your reply to the topic of Flipping with a Spinning Reel "I use a 7' loomis spinning rod heavy action to flip certain baits"

These are both in quotations if you did not notice, this is what YOU wrote.

You obviously state that you DO flip with a spinning rod and then you say it does not make any sense so you pretty much are saying that "Russ Baker makes no sense!" Since you said YOU DO know the difference between flipping and pitching you had to know what you were writing and replying to.

You keep avoiding the questions of when where why how with your posts please elaborate. I am here to learn as well, but so far your posts are just contradicting one another so as I see it your fishing information holds no credibiltiy, please make it credible. The whens and whys are what I learn from not the materialistic stuff.

BTW when you get better using those baitcasters you can start putting down the spinning rods down more, I can skip or pitch any jig under overhanging branches or under docks just as good if not better, it just takes practice practice practice. Since you have been doing this since the '70's you think you would have already mastered this ;)

Can some get Denny Brauer on the line please ...!!
It doesnt surprize me at all to read about guys flipping or pitching with Spinning gear ! Iv spent a good deal of time in the south (where anything is possible ) haha ..So iv seen guys perform unconventional technics on the water for different reasons . I would never forget the time i fished in the Tennessee bass federation regionals back in 1999 on lake chickamauga . The boater i drew for this event had a conversation with me about my spinning gear that day . He starts out by saying Hey Dez , iv been watching you cast that spinnerbait this morning and i must say that im very impressed with your casting ability . I paused for second because i really didnt understand what he ment about his statement . So i replied back him , "why do say that" ..His reply was " Iv been fishing baitcasters for a long time and iv never seen an angler put that spinnerbait in the water like your doing with your spinning gear today " .. I then went on to explain to him that i have just over the years learn to use my spinning gear to the max because of the main fact that im limited to only 1or 2 baitcasters (at the time) that offers a left hand retrieve . So the short and skinny is that because i refused to take to time to convert my casting skillset to compensate a right hand retrieve baitcaster , Iv learned how to feather my line on my spinnergear for chunking spinnerbaits . It funny how time on the water, and as ron mentioned "practice" can change and anglers approach . Needless to say , i dont use spinning gear for spinnerbaits anymore and the main reason why is because i realized two important factors over the years . 1:Baitcaters provides me extreme "Power" when compared to spinning gear 2: I dont have to work as hard to "controll " my lure when casting with a baitcaster .

My overall point here is that every angler will always do something different for a numbers of reasons ! sometimes its based on what works for them , other times its based on what may be occuring on the lake that day . Would Denny Brauer say its a good ideal to use spinning gear for flipping or pitching? "nope" ! Why should we listen to what he has say ? Because he has made a living on Flipping & pitching Jigs and is one of the best at it in the game, period !

Currently i only use spinning gear for dropshoting , cranking , jerking , small topwaters all other lures go on my Qauntum Baitcasters ! My next stage of advancement is to convert cranking and jerking over to baitcasters .. :-)

DEZ "The Rookie"
Ron,

My bad I meant to say I pitch with that Loomis spinning rod every now and then small jigs in heavy cover such as the Potholes. Yes Ron 95% of my flipping and pitching is done with a baitcaster. I have found that using that 7' spinning rod in the holes to pitch with that I can pitch much farther with it than using the casting rod. I will also use plastics for further distance with the spinning outfit for pitching.

For example when you have about 60 feet of lay downs I like to use the spinning rod for better distance. I first use the bait caster in the lay downs for close quarter flipping and pitching then switch to the spinning rod. Or sometimes you have laydowns the first 30 feet or so and behind the laydowns you will see open water is another time when I utilize the spinning reel for greater distance to get my bait way back in that open water. How is that Ron? Now granted you might have to plow your boat in to that stuff to get that fish out or have a real long net.

I am seeing now that I need to be more deatiled when explaining my methods as to why I fish the way I do. Being vague on this site just doesnt work
