Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Several years ago while fishing a B.A.S.S. event in the Tri Cities I drew Ron Mace.  At that time he was running a Bullet boat and as we completed our run to the Snake I asked him "How fast were we going"?  I think he said in the low 90's.  I know Bass fishermen are proud of their boats and performance. I thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone is running, set up, and performance.

2007 Ranger Z-20 with 225 H.O. ETEC, Raker II 26p prop.

Have run 71 (GPS) with me and another adult, tanks both 3/4 full. Last year with my wife and two kids in the boat, we ran from Lincoln on Lake Roosevelt to Spring Canyon, lake was like glass, held 69MPH the whole way. (the gas tanks were a lot emptier when we got to the ramp)

Chop does not bother it, and no chine walk, one hand on wheel if you want, I prefer both on it. Would not want to hit that 4 foot roller in Lake WA though, those are bone jarring in any boat.

My last bass boat was an old Skeeter 150SF, you want to talk Chine walk? That was one scary ride, 70MPH across Lake Sam would nearly induce cardiac arrest! Luckily I was younger then without the stress I have today.

Tempest 25 prop, full tourney load and full fuel tank, no passenger, I have hit 65MPH on Lake Sammamish in January.

Guessing smoother water and cold, dense air on Sammamish helped.

However, at 65MPH GPS, the ride was a bit scary... chine walk, constant trim, steering, and smooth touch on the hotfoot.

I'm still learning to drive, so take that into consideration.

One question I have is...

Is there a 21 foot bass boat out there that will carry a full tournament load, full fuel tank, with fishing partner, and comfortably do 70 MPH in slightly choppy water? Does such a boat exist, and what is it?

I hit a 4 foot wake doing about 55 GPS on Lake Wa last year, and after pulling the prop out of water, and then slamming back down at a complete stop, I thought I had broken something in my body... very scary experience.

I've heard talk of full tournament loads in Skeeters and Rangers doing 70 MPH plus in chop without so much as a twitch, even hands off steering wheel.

Are these stories true, or just wishful thinking?

Thanks for any input!
I have a 1994 Nitro 190DC with a 1998 merc 225 EFI. 25" pitch 4 bladed Turbo. Light load with 1/2 full tanks I have GPS'd it at 69.8. Have played with the jack plate and on the wish list would be a new prop but so far it runs well. When I first got it it had a wicked chine walk. I tightend up the steering cable at the motor and 90% of the handling problems disapeared. It came from the factory with a 225hp rating(sticker) but I know it was a misprint because all the brochures rate it at 175hp. The previous owner of course replaced the motor with the bigger one. Looking back on the whole thing the boat ran even better (not faster just better)with the smaller outboard. There's a lesson here. It's not always better to go bigger. It is a good boat for rough water (higher sides-dry ride) but WOT in heavy chop requires bigger balls than I have. LOL.
20x3 with 250 ProXs with 10" jackplate

With a 26 Fury can get 75 with myself and 70 with tourney load - also no chine at all. RPM's at 5600 and set 3" below pad. The Fury seems to like being a little lower.

With a 25 Fury can get 79 with myself but have not tried with a tourney load yet. Will let you know sometime soon. I can barely hit the rev limiter by myself with this so it should be good under tourney load. Also have it set at 3" below pad and will experiment with that more once water temps are higher.

I also tried the 26 Tempest Plus and had nearly identical performance as the 26 Fury except holeshot and acceleration are better with the Fury.

The only time I had issues with chine was when I didn't have my motor set at the correct height. Like Ron said the X2 and X3 hulls are a smooth dry ride.

The Phoenix 721 with either a 250 XS or 250 SHO Yamaha will do 75 plus with two guys, gear, etc. all day long. I also have heard the newer Tritons and Z521 Rangers will do the same speed as well with same tournament loads.

Come on Russ. You are comparing a Phoenix to a lead sled Ranger ?? I believe the Triton will run those speeds ;-)
Chris,

Not comparing the Phoenix to a Ranger at all-just making a comment about what I have heard the other two brands will run with full tourney loads.

Russ you know the answer to your questions it was in your shop two weeks ago. :)

I have a 1998 Skeeter 300ZX thats over 21 foot! with a 225HP EFI not a 250 like all the new boats are sporting. With a 25 pitch merc prop 4 -blade. Last sept on GPS with full tanks, 2 guys and tournament tackle 74.1 on GPS. Not to mention its pretty dam stable! and that was going up river/current at tricites. I will throw in that was perfect running water a lsight ripple / chop that made her purrrr. On flat calm water she will run about 73 but will fall off pad a little. So I'm lowering the jack plate now. May loose a MPH or 2 we'll see. Either way pretty fast for an old BIG dog.
1990 Champion 201 w/200 JohnsonGT turning 26 Raker. Tournament loaded w/ 2 and full gas and wells will GPS 69-70 depending on water. I had it to 73.8 on American just me, light and empty but that's not realistic under normal conditions.

A friend of mine had a 1996 300zx with 225 EFI Merc. Fun boat to drive. 72 all day long GPS. Not bad for a 21 with 225.
I run a 2006 Stratos 200 ProXL w/ a 225 ETEC HO. It is being pushed by a slightly dinged up 27" Tempest. The boat has seen 75.7 with a light load. Sunday at the ABA on Banks Lake with two anglers, full livewlls, and a little over 25 gallons of fuel, we pushed it up to 70.4 on the run back into the weigh-in. I had about 200 rpm's left.
No chance Hall's Triton will run 78 on GPS at Banks. Maybe speedo, not GPS. I doubt it runs 78 at sealevel with low gas and one person, let alone 1500 feet above sealevel at Banks.

05' Triron Tr21x with an 05' Merc Opti. loaded out will GPS at 69-70 at Banks and alone with lite load I have hit 74 MPH GPS one time but now can't get past 73.6 GPS. I was talking to Paul Hall after the ABA tourney yesterday and two weeks ago on Banks Lake he was running 78 MPH GPS. He has an 07' Triton Tr21 HP with a 250 pro xs
LOL. People getting "hard" on wafish about boat speeds.
I have an 07 TR21X with a 250 Opti ProXS, and I can hit 78 on GPS on Sammamish, so I don't doubt Hall's HP can hit that at least in the colder weather anyways. I've always run more sluggish at banks in the Summertime, especially on the holeshot.

David Ohl said:
Hall only judges his speed based on his gps! I know hes not lying because I was with him a week before the frost bite tourney and with two of us in his boat with an 1/8 tank of fuel we hit 76mph gps! I saw it with MY OWN EYES! So I would apperciate it if you would think before you spoke! WTF do you know? Do you know what setup he's running? Have you been in his boat? Do you even know him?
