Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hey guys, I'm kicking an idea around.

Eastern Washington Bass Classic

A 2 day team tournament on Potholes in May, with lots of sponsor prizes and fun side pots, etc.

$200 a team

80% payback to 1/4 of field

Guaranteed $5K first place (more if more boats)

Payouts bolstered up by some sponsor dollars and prizes

The proceeds would go to support the EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BASS CLUB?

Along with a Lake Clean-Up/Habitat Project that you would recieve a discount from a local retailer if you participate.

With the Eastern Washington University Fishing Club starting this Fall by me, looking to get started on some fundraising, plus I think it'd be a lot of fun to run a tournament.

You sound kind of sensitive.

I don't say much on here on Wafish because when somebody says something unpopular they get blasted. But this time I have to weigh in on this.

This past Saturday Gary Stiles from NW Bass, Ken Day from BASS, Larry Williams from ABA, and myself from WSBF, met at Banks Lake to work together to set our schedules for 2011. You have no idea how hard it is to try to work our circuits out so that we don't sit on each other without being on top of all of the opens that are now already being run. We all talked about how many opens there are now days and how hard it is to run a circuit. As I am sure most of you know, the state only allows 2 permits per month on a given body of water. The two events per month include walleye tournaments. And I hate to say this but the schedule is full this year. So the question I have to put to you is where is the extra weekend going to come from for another tournament?

I am saying is support what is out there. There are more than enough events to fish. Trying to add more will just make it harder for the established circuits to get permits.

I wish we had a longer season or more large bodies of water but we don't. And if we did it where would the angler's come from? If people have to choose between two opens both tournaments will suffer with lower participation. Which hurts everyone.

In closing I ask you to support the events that are on the calendar now and have fun. Adding more will only hurt those that have worked hard to build their events and make the permitting process even harder than it is now.

Thanks for listening.
I agree with CRide on how frustrating it is when turnouts are so small that it is hard to get your entry fee back with a good finish. The thing is that there must be a reason some tournament circuits are more successful than others.

I'm probably opening up a can of worms but I wouldn't say it is correct/fair to ask all of us to support the failing and poorly run circuits. Perhaps it is time the circuits that aren't doing well step up to the plate and offer the same quality of venue as the circuits that are doing well. If not maybe it's time for something new.

I think you have a great idea Nick that I would be in support of. Maybe change the time of year to avoid tournament/prefish conflicts.
Sensitive? Yeah, I am. Only because I really do care.

Or maybe it's because I need to have my head examined. LOL
I couldn't agree more. I have yet to observe a scenario where more competion was worse for the consumer. In this case we are the consumer and we spend our money where we feel we get the best value. When my customers stop showing up I assume it is because my value proposition has grown old or somone else has come up with a better one. The best events have and always will get the best turnouts.

This year I've been more frustrated then ever with tournaments. Americanbass has changed their schedule so many times it's sick, WSBF has changed their schedule a few times, and BASS didn't even use a permit they had for Lake Washington in May! Thank you tournament directors for all you do! It's a hard job, with little to no monetary reward. With that said, when are you guys going to start listening to what the anglers wan't? When are we going to have the opportunity to vote on lakes and potential dates? Sponsorship opportunities will allways be out there even in this economy. I know this, because I helped Jordan with the raffle at the Wafish tourny, and I got a hell of a lot more yes's, than "sorry we're not able to help at this time." It seems to me that some of you are satisfied with mediocrity. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Look at what happened at the Berkley tournament; ton's of free stuff=ton's of participation! You guy's have to listen to us........With that said, I say go for it Nick! Sounds like a great idea, in which I'm sure participation will be high! These circuits aren't hurting because the little guy is screwing them over, they're hurting because they dug their own grave! People will congregate to the best product.
Nick a couple things to consider. You go back 10-15 yrs we really did not have a true competitive money circuit. The big events were federation. With new anglers came new ideas, and allot of us wanting to fish money events vs. club and federation. Now we have both and lots of options. I agree with Gary I think we are getting over populated on key bodies of water that you have to use for large tournaments. As Aaron mentioned you can hold a big tourney at the right time have great fishing and give away great cash and prizes and they will come. But as Gary mentioned someone would more than likely suffer.
I support the up and comers especially at the level you are targeting I would fish just to support it! But just because there allot of popular tourneys on potholes don’t limit yourself thinking that potholes is the SH*&%*^! In May there are tons of bodies’ water that would be stellar! Whatcom, Scootney, tricities, Long lake??? Pend Oreille, Chelan, Moses?? PS go check out moses in a couple weeks you may be surprised?

Thinking ways outside the box revive the CAST event and partner up with CAST to make it big, you're a marketer right???? Do your thing with CAST! they could help and it could be a grand slam for all.
Make it a big fish tourney 3 person team with one person that must be under age 25??

For what it’s worth just throwing it at ya!
Rick, I totally see your viewpoint. I know there is a lot of good bodies that time of year, its just the "Ease" I guess of the venue, with accomodations, central location, and such. But am totally open to more bodies of water.

I do believe that tournaments are getting overpopulated, and at the demise of some tournaments. I have seen the turnout overall go down the drain with overlapping dates. But I believe the better events will draw the boats.

The Big Bass Blast type event is something I have always wanted to kick around too. Do like the Skeeter big bass tourney in Texas, with Big fish every hour for 7-8 hours with payouts to each fish plus prizes for 2 days.

Good Idea's people!! Keep them coming.
"Eastern Washington Bass Classic"...awesome name! On Potholes, in the Spring...awesome location!! Big money...you will have a nice turnout!!!

Nick I think your young and you have an awesome vission. Work with the touney directors and make this thing happen...great idea bud!
Nick I don't know if this is the same event, but I heard rumors out of Mardon that they were going to try and hold a big money open tournament in the later part of May next year. I think if you are already in communication with Mike over there and the various tournament directors you could pull it off and a good turnout would show up for the same reasons that Aaron and Joel stated. I sure as hell would want to fish it!!!
Cool, I will gladly take your money.

I agree Chad. One thing I would like to see in the Northwest Bass tournament circuit is to mix up the schedule a bit. I realize there are only a handful of lakes that you can fish with proper accomodations but it would be fun to have the tournaments with the same lakes even at different times of the year (hint: lake washington in august). Thoughts? Any input stilen?
