Othello gal wins bass tournament

Nichole Brady, 28, Othello, took first-place in the non-boater category of the Washington State Bass Federation Tournament that concluded Aug. 29. She is the first female in the state to qualify for the event.

“I’m so excited, I can hardly believe it,” Brady said. “Now, I get to go to Lake Navajo, N.M., in May and take part in a divisional tournament.”

Brady participated in a series of four one-day tournaments over the summer this year that determined the eventual winners in both the non-boater and boater categories.

The first two were held at the Potholes in June and the third and fourth in August on the Columbia River.

Members of the Washington State Bass Federation team pictured in front row from left are Nichole Brady, Ron Mace, Terry Day, Chase Ratchford and Match Ratchford. Back row from left are Aaron Echternkamp, Mark Maderos, Gene Batey, Tony Lind, Jeremy Percifield, Steve Loreng, Don Hogue and Jake Cook.

“At the end of each, we turned in the combined weight of the five heaviest fish and I was in fourth place after the third tournament,” Brady said. “I knew if I could just stay consistent and turn in the same amount of weight or more, I had a good chance to finish near the top in my category.”

Thirty pair of non-boater and boaters teamed up for the tournament were not only battling each other fishing for small and largemouth bass, with a minimum of 12 inches in length, they were also waging a war with the elements, particularly on the final day of competition.

“The weather was pretty rough … we had to fight the wind and white caps all day,” Brady said. “I figured the fish would be on the move, so we fished a specific area. When it was all said and done, I didn’t think I had enough to win, but it turned out I had more than enough.”

Brady turned in a total of 49 pounds, 5 ounces of bass for tournament to take top honors among non-boaters and seventh-place over all.

“When the first-place winner in the non-boater category was announced, he said, ‘She and I thought, Oh, my God … that’s me,’” she said. “Now I get to go to Lake Navajo next spring and be a part of the group representing Washington state. But if I expect to go on to become champion, I’ll have to beat every one of them.”

There is no prize money for participating and winning the tournaments, Brady said, but they are pre-qualifiers for the national Bass Master Classic, which takes place in the fall of 2011.
