Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

So I just bought a new Triton 20x3 recently. The other day I took the centercaps and hub covers off to check my lugnut torque. I put one side on and forgot the other side and ran over them when pulling my boat out. Nixon's sent me up replacements on the house. I put them on this morning and I broke one of the new hub covers today backing into the garage.

It got me thinking of what a dumb.... I was and wondering what kind of mishaps you guys have had.

I know this is pretty minor and I'm sure there are some good tales out there so let's hear them.

Well don't feel bad, the most memorable to me was when my dad backed the boat into the garage without lifting the door all the way. The Pedestal caught the door and and bent it completely over and ruined the door. It was a costly error!
Once back when I got my first bass boat I was towing a guy. I was using the electric motor and we got to the ramp so I slowed down. We weren't going that fast but his boat kept coming and ran into the back of me. I didn't think it was going to do anything but that metal ring you use to trailer the boat (I can't remember what it is called) punched a hole right through the back of my boat. It was a sickening sound.
I tryed to jump a cruiser boat wake last year at lake WA. Needless to say that wake was way bigger than I thought and took a wave over the bow that darn near threw me out the boat. Good thing BassCats are known for not sinking. 15 minutes on the bilge pump and the water still wasn't all the way out. I noticed I was dragging almost 40 feet of rubrail behind the boat after I gathered my wits. I had to crawl around the boat pushing it back in. But guess what, none of my tackle in the compartments got wet ;)
People in my club have heard this, but its too good to pass up.

I was pre-fishing lake roosevelt for a club tournament in my old 17.5' Tracker. The wind was kicking up a bit, but I thought nothing of it. As I'm crusing down the lake I see 3 fellow club members returning to the launch early, again thought nothing of it. As I got 3/4 of the way to my spot the wind really kicked up and it was white cap city. I proceeded to turn the boat around and make my way back. I was going slow, but still slapping the waves pretty hard. When I returned to the launch I noticed I had a 6" long but 1" tall gash in the side of my boat where it cracked from hitting the waves hard. So we made a trip to the local hardware store and two things of JB weld (applied by a stick on the ground) later I was ready for action the next day. Needless to say the bilge was running literally all day the next two days, and to top it off I won the tournament, what a trip.
Geez, the list is too long for me. The most memorable was getting auto ejected from my boat at Sammamish two years ago fishing the BASS qualifier. A tree from the sunken forest had shifted and I was running thru an area near the sunken forest when at 55mph I hit the very top of the tree. Mind you I have ran a 1000 times thru this spot and never had hit a thing. After being tossed from the boat at 55 and doing cartwheels across the water, I pop up only to see my boat still going. The kill switch around my wrist had pulled off without killing the motor. Fortunately my partner of the day was not thrown from the boat and gets control of it and comes around and picks me up. Before crawling into the boat, I dive under the boat to look for damage. Yikes. Get up on deck, strip naked, put some dry clothes on and kept fishing the rest of the day. Even managed a limit. 9000 bucks in damage to the hull though. John Tern did an outstanding job of fixing it, and it runs perfect, no chine walk, no pull left or right and still as fast.

I can't really say I done anything super stupid, besides maybe leave the transom saver on (Stainless vs. Aluminum, Aluminum loses...haha). Also, I was on Silver Lake and the water was up about 1/2 a foot, covering pilings. So I thought I was safe enough away from the pilings, then bam, smacked right into it. Not a lot of damage, but some marine-tex and sanding and we were good to go.
Besides sinking one? LOL. No seriously I sank my boat a few years back on Washington. I had a 18' Tracker (Fiberglass) and it was during sockeye season. I had some battery problems and was back there trying to switch around batteries when a 30'+ boat came racing by me on plane no less than 10' from me. Well since my battery compartments were open they just naturally filled up when I got swamped by that jerks wake. My bilge was dissconnected so I was in deep s**t to say the least! Luckily a friend of mine was pretty close and towed us towards Mercer Island. Just as we got within jumping distance of a dock, it sank like a rock in 20' of water. I lost quite a few rods and reel combo's as well as my gps units with all of my Potholes waypoints on it! To rub salt in the giant wound, I also lost my limit of sockeye!!!!!
Maybe bass will start relating to it and we'll have a new spot.

They actually had a salvage crew dive down and hook up some giant floats to it and it floated right up. That and the tow back to the Mercer launch cost 1200.00, but luckily insurance covered it. The boat was totalled though, from beating against the rocks for several hours.

If I remember right WCCT has a pretty good video of it. I can also tell you that wawa is not his favorite lake.
On the very 1st day breaking in my new 20i (2 years ago) I plugged the spedo w/ some wood I had hit. Got home and tried to use a drill bit and my hand to gently remove it. the bit caught some metal, and stuck inside the lower unit. Unable to free it by hand I gently attached the screw gun to it, and tried to back it out, and snapped the drill bit right off inside the lower unit. Yup it is still in there today.
Hey Mike I just did that same thing last week and like yours the bit is still in the boat!

Mine would have to be leaving the trolling motor down while trying to load the boat on the trailer. The boat doesn't load when you try this. Trust me. Best part was that I was leading the tournament on Saturday in our club tourney. I tried to fish on Sunday but had to hold the trolling motor down with one hand and try and fish with the other. The wind on Riffe was too bad to fish without a trolling motor. Had to pull out of the tourney on Sunday.
