Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I am fishing a tournament this weekend and I can't make a decision. Maybe some advise from a few guys will help me decide. I fish this tournament every year and do very well. I always go for smallies and pull in bags from 19-21 lbs every year. So I just got done pre-fishing and happened upon some huge Largemouth. Lots of them. They where all 4-7 lbs. The problem is that I am not sure if they will be there this weekend and it is kinda far from my usual spot that I always do well in. The Largemouth would easily take the tournament if they are still there. What should I do? I could cross my fingers and hope to get the big greens or play it safe and go to my spot. Here's the other issue. I know that if I am not on my smallie spot first thing, There will be a guy on it that always tries to beat me to it. He's got a slow boat though. Should I go for it?

Chris,

Go big or stay home!
This comes from a guy who's never fished a tourney.
You gotta go for the win.
There's no guarantee that the smallie hole will produce.
Beisdes if the other guy has a slower (smaller?)boat, can't you just push him out with your beast! :)

Good Luck!
I would get a quick limit of SM then go for the LM.
You should really try to determine how much weight you think you need to win (if that is your goal). 19-21 pounds is a good weight for this time of the year, and you said you always do well at this tournament, I assume with the smallmouths you have been catching. If I thought I could win with 19-21 pounds of smallmouths, and I thought that would be playing "safe", then there is no tough decision here. You can always go for the largemouths after you nail your smallmouth weight.

You didn't say if the largemouth were biting or not, so that is an unknown, and on top of that, largemouth are less dependable than smallmouths. If you felt you needed 24 pounds to win, then no question, go for the largemouths.

Good luck!

ciao,
Marc
I'd go smallies and then if I had a good bag early enough I would go try to get a kicker green fish. Good luck.
I agree with Eric, Shawn and Marc. Fish your smallmouth water that has produced those big bags for you year after year. After you get your quality limit, you can weigh your options and decide if going for a kicker largemouth or two is a good strategy based on the timing and conditions. If no one else has found those big greenies, you'll really be in business.

I also like Mike's idea of going for broke and stomping the competition with a huge bag, but then again I'm not a tourney guy either. If I did have the time to fish tourneys, I would probably gamble too often and get my @ss kicked.

Have fun and good luck, C-Ride!
Man I wish I had your problem ;)

Good luck C-Ride !
No doubt, my eyes got a little watery after reading about this horrible dilemma Chris has.

SM limit equals more confidence during the LM upgrade...
I believe it's a river....

This lake can't exist in real life, you're fishing a tournament on your kids' Xbox, or Playstation aren't you?

I'm not sure what the dilema is here. I can't imagine a tournament this time of year where 19-21 pounds wouldn't win. I can tell you that if I felt as confident as you did about getting a 20 pound bag then I would go get that bag and let the chips fall where they may. How many guys know about these LM and are they always there or was this a rare occurance on this body of water? I made a decision at Lake Washington to fish to a big bag of LM that we could see but everyone and their brother knew about them and it ended up with Jeff and I not weighing a fish that day.Go get your big SM and if you have time, go find a kicker ot two.

Disclaimer- This is my second season of tournament fishing and I have not hoisted the big cardboard check over my head yet.
Chris said in an earlier post which tourney he is prefishing for. It is the Ray Stanley Memorial Tournament.

Here he is with some pigs from last year.

Its hard to believe, but it really does take a 21-22lb bag to win that tournament. There are so many quality fish in that stretch of river it crazy! It's also very under fished so catching them isn't as tough as other places. The picture shown there is Chris and I two years ago with a bag that weighed just short if 21lbs! We won by mere ounces and most bags we in the high teens.

I would encourage people to check this tournament out in the future, what a great fishery! Good luck Chris, I wish I could make it over there this year. Go for the brown first my man and get your high teens limit then upgrade.
