Another Father Vs. Daughter Challenge 07-10-09

Shark Bait Scores Again

My daughter and I had another face off today. She started with a spinnerbait and I with my first homemade crankbait. After no fish through the first 15 minutes, I switched to my drop shot rig and casted it out with a 3” Senko, wacky rigged.

As soon as my weight reaches bottom, my daughter snags her lure in the riprap and is unable to free it. She hands me her rod and takes mine and during the exchange I can’t help to think a smallie is going to nail… Continue

Another Crankin’ Story by IB 07-09-09

I recently started making my second crankbait. This one was made using the through-wire construction method, which I found to be a bit more challenging. I also decided to try a slightly different lip angle and use more weight to slow the rise of the crankbait, just to see what that would do.

I had to test the bait because I figured there would be no point in painting it if it didn’t work properly.

I got to the lake’s… Continue

Randy (My Old Man) and I will be heading over the bridge to sports radio 950kjr this saturday to spend the morning with Joel Shangle and crew. Here's the rundown from the man himself (Joel Shangle):

This Saturday 6am to 8am on sports radio 950 kjr, Northwest Wild Country Radio. Topics? Oh, brother, the sky's the limit. However, with Randy's local saltwater expertise and Jordan's bass wisdom, here are some subjects I know darn well we'll throw out there:

Dinker Bluegill fest @ Fivemile

Took my 3 year old boy up to Fivemile and worked the outside of the pads

from the shoreline, using crappie nibbles(white) and a bobber. Panfish seem to

be huddled up pretty tight together. Our first cast yielded a small gill...by the end of the day

we had caught around 20 or so. All fish were released. Small hooks are key,we were using

a size 16. The bite was constant...perfect for keeping kids interested. I highly

encourage you folks that live nearby to check it out, the… Continue

Custom Painted Lures

I just wanted to get Stan Durst a bit of advertizing for the wonderful painting he does at a very reasonable price with a fast turn around. Three musky baits - Gold Okaboji, Tiger Musky and Natural Bluegill, and two bass baits with my own design - Midnight Crawdad. Stan's a member of this site if you need to contact him.

Time to Get Crankin’ – Making them, that is.

Greetings! This is an accounting a journey I embarked upon in June 2009 that is rich in tinkering, trial, error, the excitement of the unknown and joy that I believe is worth sharing with anyone willing to read it.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 – Inspiration and Making Thought Reality

I got inspired by someone to give crankbait making a shot. I used some scrap balsa I found in the garage. I figured if balsa is good enough for Rapala, it ought to be good enough for… Continue

Daughter 5, IB 1, but almost none

My daughter and I went fishing Friday, June 5, for about three hours on the shores of Lake Union again, just five days since our first trip.

It was one of those forgetful days. I forgot to pack her rod so she I let her use my Compre spinning rod. She opted for 6# mono over 8# and it was a wise choice.

Fortunately, I had two casting rods and two Curado D reels, one with 8# and the other 10# test.

She hooks into the bass number one in the first few minutes, a… Continue

Trespassing

I thought that would get your attention.

Yeh, it's about Lk Tapps. Many 'bank' fishermen and women have used the shorelines and Puget Sound Energy dikes the last couple of years for fishing and just taking a walk. I usually pick up some trash along these dikes on my fishing trips but lately it's way out of hand. My last trip and in only one cove filled two garbage bags plus many large objects that took up the floor of my boat for the rest of the day.

The main point I'm going to make… Continue

First Fishing Outing with the Kids this Season

I took my two kids fishing last Sunday because I could no longer suppress the urge to go, but more importantly, to rekindle the fervor and excitement my kids used to have for fishing. Over the winter and spring they kept telling me things like (bass) fishing was now boring because they had no luck.

The cold, stormy, and brutal weather this past winter and spring only compounded their notions and practically ensured poor fishing prospects from the shore, the only fishing that we… Continue

Hi Everyone,

For future reference, before there are any events posted on WAFISH, they need to be approved by me beforehand. Thus far for events on posted on here guys have asked me beforehand, including the Freeze Your Bass, The Sammamish Open and even the most recent seminar at Auburn Sports and Marine for the Mike Wolsky seminar. Very Cool! Thanks guys.

I would like to invite Washington’s anglers to visit Hunting and Fishing Northwest, an online magazine. This magazine is about and for hunting and fishing in the northwest; there will be no articles about hunting Africa or fishing Russia.

Lake Tapps No Wake Zones

Just a reminder folks to pay attention to the 'No Wake' zones on the lakes we fish.

This morning(5/27) a Nitro bass boat w/musky club decal on it lauched about the same time I did but took off well within the 'no wake' zone of the Pierce Co N Tapps Park. They were flying as they passed within yards of a 5 mph buoy.

Gentlemen, the property owners of Lk Tapps would like nothing better than to shut these boat launches down to the public. Let's not give them any ammunition, please.

I… Continue

Hi Everyone,

It's been brought to my attention that a few of you don't like receiving all the emails from WaFish. Here's how to choose what you want to be notified on via email:

Gary's Family Membership

How many of you feel it would be worthwhile to become a member of Gary's family? Are any of you a member and is it worth it? Or do ya feel this is geared more to the big time fish for money tournament angler? Or is it more a " Costco" type pay to shop club? Check it out at http://www.baits.com/garys-site/intro.html

Moses lake Question

I was out pre-fishing Moses all weekend. I ran up North because I had never been up in that area. The farther north I drove, the more clumps of crud I saw. While fishing I could see mud clumps floating up to the surface, coming up from the bottom. At times I could always see at least one clump floating up. What the hecks the deal ? The North end will likely get pretty murky when those clumps break apart from all the boat traffic or wind I'd imagine. Is this normal for the lake ??
